August 26th Market Overview (no fluff)

Happy Tuesday

Markets pushed higher today despite Trump's move to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook, traders are more focused on the potential for easier money than constitutional drama.

For the record: I think the Fed independence is crucial for efficient and objective monetary policy.

Really though, tomorrow's the day that matters. Nvidia earnings could either restart the AI party or send everyone back to reality. Either way, it's going to be interesting.

Let's dig in...

P.S. I’m glad everyone enjoyed Sundays write up → Jim Simmons & the most successful hedge fund in history.

Bond Market

The Treasury market reflected expectations around Fed changes. The yield curve steepened as long-term rates rose while short-term yields declined. This pattern suggests investors expect:

  • Political pressure driving near-term rate cuts

  • Reduced inflation control focus over time

  • Higher long-term borrowing costs as Fed credibility declines

The 10-year Treasury yield sitting at 4.262%.

Learn from this investor’s $100m mistake

In 2010, a Grammy-winning artist passed on investing $200K in an emerging real estate disruptor. That stake could be worth $100+ million today.

One year later, another real estate disruptor, Zillow, went public. This time, everyday investors had regrets, missing pre-IPO gains.

Now, a new real estate innovator, Pacaso – founded by a former Zillow exec – is disrupting a $1.3T market. And unlike the others, you can invest in Pacaso as a private company.

Pacaso’s co-ownership model has generated $1B+ in luxury home sales and service fees, earned $110M+ in gross profits to date, and received backing from the same VCs behind Uber, Venmo, and eBay. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.

What to Watch

Nvidia Earnings Wednesday
The AI story lives or dies here. Data center revenue, margins, and guidance will determine if this rally continues or tech gets hammered. A miss sends ripples through the entire sector.

Federal Reserve Court Fight
Cook's lawsuit tests whether presidents can actually fire Fed governors. A Trump win fundamentally changes central bank independence. Watch for injunctions that could drag this out for months.

China Trade Talks Resume
First formal talks since the tariff truce begin this week with negotiator Li Chenggang. Key issues:

  • Unresolved soybean purchase commitments

  • Rare earth mineral export restrictions

  • Potential for 200% tariffs if talks fail

Pentagon Equity Stakes
Lutnick's defense contractor comments could reshape the entire military-industrial complex. Watch for specific proposals beyond the Intel model that could hit major contractors like Lockheed Martin.
